Amazon Listing Suppression: Causes and Fixes
A suppressed listing is invisible to shoppers. It does not appear in search results. The product detail page either shows an error or redirects. Your inventory sits in a warehouse earning nothing. And Amazon does not always send a clear notification when it happens.
Suppression is one of the most common problems Amazon sellers face, and it is almost always fixable once you know what triggered it. This guide covers the main suppression types, where to find the reason in Seller Central, and the specific fix for each.
Where to find suppressed listings
In Seller Central, go to Inventory > Manage All Inventory. Above the inventory table, you will see filter tabs. Click Suppressed. This shows every listing Amazon has pulled from search, grouped by the reason for suppression.
Each suppressed listing shows an "Issue" column with a short description of the problem. Click the issue to see Amazon's guidance for that specific suppression type. The detail is often sparse, which is why this guide exists.
If you manage a large catalogue, the listing issues scanner approach lets you catch suppressions programmatically rather than checking Seller Central manually.
Missing main image
This is the single most common suppression type. Amazon requires every listing to have a main image that meets specific technical standards. If the main image is missing, corrupt, or fails validation, the listing is suppressed immediately.
What triggers it
- No image uploaded at all
- Image file is corrupt or fails to load
- Image does not meet minimum resolution (1000 x 1000 pixels recommended, 500 x 500 minimum)
- Main image has text overlays, logos, watermarks, or badges
- Main image background is not pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255)
- Product does not fill at least 85% of the image frame
The fix
Upload a compliant main image. Use a pure white background, no text or graphics, and ensure the product fills most of the frame. Once the image passes validation, the suppression typically lifts within an hour.
For the full specification, see our Amazon main image requirements guide.
Title policy violations
Amazon enforces title rules more strictly than it used to. In 2026, the 75-character title limit applies across most categories, and titles that exceed it or contain banned content are flagged.
What triggers it
- Title exceeds the category character limit
- Title contains promotional language ("best seller," "free shipping," "limited time")
- Title contains special characters that Amazon does not allow (certain Unicode, excessive punctuation)
- Title contains HTML tags or encoding artefacts
- Title is missing entirely
The fix
Edit the title to comply with the category style guide. Remove promotional language, trim to within the character limit, and strip any special characters. Save the listing in Seller Central or submit via flat file. Title suppressions usually resolve within a few hours.
Pricing errors
Amazon monitors listing prices against recent sales data, competitor prices, and the product's own price history. If your price falls outside what Amazon considers a reasonable range, the listing may be suppressed with a "Potential Pricing Error" flag.
What triggers it
- Price is significantly higher than the recent average for the same ASIN
- Price is significantly lower than expected (Amazon flags this to prevent race-to-bottom errors)
- A price change was unusually large in a single update
- The "was price" (list price) creates an implausible discount percentage
The fix
If the price is genuinely correct, go to the Pricing tab in the listing editor, confirm the price, and click the option to override the pricing alert. If you made an error, correct the price. Amazon may require you to set a minimum and maximum price in your pricing rules to prevent future false triggers.
Restricted product or category
Some products require Amazon's approval before you can list them. If you upload a listing in a restricted category without the necessary approval, or if Amazon reclassifies your product into a restricted category after listing, the listing will be suppressed.
What triggers it
- Product is in a gated category (e.g., certain grocery, health, beauty, or automotive subcategories)
- Product requires brand approval and your Brand Registry status has lapsed or does not cover that brand
- Amazon's automated classification has reclassified the product into a restricted node
- Product type requires compliance documentation you have not provided (e.g., safety data sheets, CE marking)
The fix
Apply for approval in the restricted category through Seller Central. Go to Inventory > Add a Product, search for the category, and follow the approval flow. Some categories require documentation (invoices, certifications). Once approved, the suppression lifts. If you believe the classification is wrong, open a Seller Central case to request a reclassification.
Product safety concerns
Safety-related suppressions are the most serious type. Amazon may suppress a listing if it receives a complaint, identifies a potential hazard, or detects that the product falls under a recall.
What triggers it
- Customer complaint about a safety issue (injury, allergic reaction, electrical fault)
- Product matches a known recall by a regulatory body
- Listing claims contradict safety regulations (e.g., health claims on a supplement without required disclaimers)
- Missing compliance information for products that require it (children's products, electronics, food contact materials)
The fix
Safety suppressions almost always require a Seller Central case. Prepare your documentation before opening the case: compliance certificates, test reports, and a clear statement that the product is not the one under recall (if applicable). Response times vary, but expect days rather than hours. Do not resubmit the listing without addressing the underlying concern.
Incomplete product information
Amazon requires certain attributes for every product type. The specific required fields vary by category, but missing any of them can trigger suppression.
What triggers it
- Missing product identifier (UPC, EAN, or GTIN, unless the brand has a GTIN exemption)
- Missing required category-specific attributes (size, colour, material, etc.)
- Bullet points missing entirely (some categories require a minimum number)
- Description missing
- Brand name missing or not matching Brand Registry
The fix
Check which fields are marked as required for your product type in the category listing guide. Fill in every required field. If you are uploading via flat file, Amazon's processing summary will tell you which fields failed validation. See our flat file errors guide for help interpreting those error codes.
Suppressed vs. stranded vs. inactive
These three statuses are often confused but mean different things:
- Suppressed: The listing exists but is hidden from shoppers due to a policy or content violation. Fix the issue and it comes back.
- Stranded: You have FBA inventory but no active listing attached to it. This happens when a listing is deleted or the SKU is deactivated. The inventory is sitting in a warehouse with nothing to sell it.
- Inactive: The listing exists but is not buyable, usually because you are out of stock or the listing was closed by the seller. This is not a policy issue.
Each requires a different fix. Suppression is a content or compliance problem. Stranded inventory is a listing-to-inventory linking problem. Inactive is usually a stock or seller-action problem.
Preventing suppression before it happens
The most effective prevention is to validate listing content before it reaches Amazon. A pre-submission check that covers the common triggers will catch most suppressions before they happen:
- Verify the title is within the character limit and contains no banned phrases.
- Confirm the main image meets all technical requirements.
- Check that all required category attributes are filled.
- Validate product identifiers (UPC/EAN) against the GS1 database.
- Ensure the price is within a reasonable range for the product type.
- Confirm you have category approval for any gated categories.
Rufusly's listing issues scanner catches the content-side triggers automatically. For flat file uploads, run validation before submitting. It is far easier to fix a problem in a spreadsheet than to unpick a suppression after the fact.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my Amazon listing suppressed?
Amazon suppresses listings when they violate a content policy or are missing required information. The most common triggers are a missing main image, a title that exceeds the character limit or contains banned phrases, missing product identifiers, pricing errors (your price is too high or too low compared to recent sales), and restricted product flags. The exact reason is shown in the Suppressed tab under Manage Inventory in Seller Central.
How long does it take to unsuppress a listing?
For content-related suppressions (missing image, title violation, incomplete information), the listing typically reactivates within 15 minutes to a few hours once you fix the issue and save the changes. Pricing suppressions can take up to 24 hours. Restricted product or safety-related suppressions may require a Seller Central case and can take days or weeks to resolve, depending on whether Amazon requests documentation.
Can I still sell while my listing is suppressed?
No. A suppressed listing is invisible to shoppers. It does not appear in search results, and the product detail page returns an error or redirects. Your inventory is still held in FBA (if applicable), and the ASIN still exists, but no one can buy it until the suppression is lifted. Existing orders placed before the suppression will still be fulfilled.
How can I prevent listing suppression?
The most reliable prevention is a pre-publish check: verify your title is within the character limit, your main image meets Amazon requirements (white background, no text overlays, no watermarks), all required fields are filled, your price is within a reasonable range, and your product is not in a restricted category you lack approval for. Automated scanning tools catch most of these before they reach Amazon.
Does listing suppression affect my account health?
A single suppressed listing does not directly damage your Account Health Rating. However, repeated policy violations, especially related to restricted products or safety concerns, can accumulate and lead to account-level warnings or suspensions. Product authenticity and safety suppressions are treated more seriously than missing-image suppressions. Fix every suppression promptly rather than letting them pile up.
